Parent-Baby Dedication

parent_baby_page_header

It is the parents who are given the weighty responsibilities of bringing their children up “in the training and admonition of the Lord.” (Ephesians 6:4) So this class on January 31st & service on February 7th is more appropriately a time for you as a parent to consider and commit to the God-given joy of parenting.  We are requiring this brief class for anyone who has never been before or for those who haven’t been in less than 5 years.  Of course, if you have been within 5 years you are certainly welcome to join us.  Here’s a bit of what to expect during our time together:

  • Aaron Wilson, Children’s Ministries Director, will give a short exhortation from Scripture that will inform us of our duties as parents.
  • Aaron will also share some helpful parenting resources that have been helpful to his own & many other families here at BCLR.
  • Teresa Ingram and/or Lahresa Bailey will share how our Children’s Ministry can best serve you and your little one from the cradle and up through the preschool years.
  • Gina Eggebrecht will be present to collect some information from you to make our dedication service a special time to remember.  You’ll need one photo of your entire family & one of just your child (Email these to ginaegg[AT]sbcglobal[dot]net before February 1st.  Gina will have her camera if you don’t have a photo) and you’ll need to chose a Bible verse for you & your child to be displayed on the screen with your photo.
  • You’ll also receive a gift!
  • As time permits, we’ll also have a time of Q&A about parenting, the BCLR children’s ministry, or anything else on your mind.
  • Any Questions?  Email Aaron Wilson.

In the meantime, please look over these “10 Commandments of Parenting,” as we will ask you to commit to these as they reflect God’s desire for parents.  You might also want to hear a recent sermon by Aaron Wilson entitled, “Raising Children Who Set Their Hope in God.”

My Dedication as a Parent
(Ten Commandments of Parenting)

  1. I will seek, as God enables me, to show my children how a husband loves his wife, as Christ loved the church (Ephesians 5:25), and how a wife subjects herself to her husband in everything, just as the church willingly subjects herself to Christ (Ephesians 5:24);
  2. I will seek, as God enables me, to confess my sinfulness to my family (Proverbs 28:13), as well as seek their forgiveness when necessary (Matthew 6:14-15; Colossians 3:13), for the ultimate desire to be pleasing to God in all my ways (2 Corinthians 5:9);
  3. I will seek, as God enables me, to abstain form sexual immorality (1 Thessalonians 4:3-8), and to promote sexual purity in my home (Proverbs 5-7);
  4. I will seek, as God enables me, to manage the Lord’s money and resources with the utmost integrity (1Timothy 6:5-10), delighting in ways to be a better steward of all our time, talent, and treasure (Proverbs 31:10-31), while always looking to Him to provide for our basic life needs (Matthew 6:31-34;1 Timothy 5:8);
  5. I will seek, as God enables me, to do the work of an evangelist (2 Timothy 4:5), witnessing to those with whom I come in contact, of the love and mercy provided alone in Jesus Christ, and to instill in my children the same desire to share this eternal message (1 Corinthians 15:1-4);
  6. I will seek, as God enables me, to raise my children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4);
  7. I will seek, as God enables me, to teach my children the Word of God (Deuteronomy 6:4-9), and to endeavor to be a model of Christlikeness for them (1 John 2:6);
  8. I will seek, as God enables me, to consistently provide my children with the rod of reproof, for their correction and training, so that they will cease their foolishness and become wise (Proverbs 13:24; 19:18; 22:15; 23:13-14);
  9. I will seek, as God enables me, to speak with godly wisdom (Proverbs 4:24; 6:12; 10:32; 19:1), and to continually train my children not to speak unrighteously (Ephesians 4:29-31);
  10. I will seek, as God enables me, to love my God with all my heart, mind, soul, and strength, and to love my neighbor as myself (Matthew 22:37-40), seeking to live a pure and undefiled religion by visiting orphans and widows in their distress, and keeping myself unstained by the world (James 1:27), all the while desiring to see the same in my children and theirs.
